School Notes 26/09/2019

Law Education for Schools Programme for Transition Years: TY students were recently given a unique insight into the legal world during this engaging two day Law module. In the course of the module, students participated in a mock trial, during which participants were introduced to the art of persuasion, speaking succinctly and the skill of “thinking on one’s feet”. Great fun was had by all.

BT Young Scientist 2020: There has been a great buzz around the school as students have been busy preparing their entries for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2020. We wish all students the very best of luck as they submit their proposals to enter this prestigious competition.

Higher Options 2019: Leaving Certificate students recently travelled to the Higher Options Conference organised by the Irish Times and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors. This was the perfect opportunity for students to connect directly with third level colleges and universities and to seek advice and information about the application processes attached to the CAO and the UCAS admission bodies. Further information was available on the SUSI grant application process, and students had the chance to ask specific questions directly. The opportunity to attend a variety of information sessions was available, with students garnering information on a diverse range of careers ranging from Engineering to Architecture, Nursing to Law, to name but a few. Thank you to Ms. Corkery and Mr. Crossan for organising the trip and for accompanying students on the day.

Celebrating European Day of Languages (EDL) at Ballymahon Vocational School: What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the diversity of languages across Europe and a chance for schools and all organisations to alert the public to the importance of language learning. A fun and interactive table quiz was enjoyed by 1st and 2nd Years in the spacious surroundings of our Sports Hall and everybody just loved the scrumptious pancakes from our Pop-Up Creperie! Special thanks to each of our marvellous language teachers at BVS for making such an enjoyable day possible.

Senior Girls Match Report: BVS vs Árdscoil Phádraig Granard 23/09/2019

Half Time: 2-4 to 3-6 Full Time: 7-8 to 4-13

A great win by the Senior BVS girls, overcoming a good team from Granard. The girls were trailing at half time by 5 points but in the end they came through winning by 4 points. Emma Tumelty was an excellent help when she came on at half time. Other great performances came from Caoimhe McCormack, Emma McGuire and Emma Murtagh with Caoimhe scoring 4 goals and 3 points. Well done to our girls, getting off to a good start winning their first championship game. By Shane Hanley and Fionn Morgan

Pictured above are Tara Noonan and Ronan Farrell. Both students were recipients of the Longford Westmeath ETB Award for Academic Excellence. A fantastic achievement for both students.
