School Notes 10/01/2019

Sympathy: As a school community we were saddened to hear of the passing of past student Aidan Bannon. Aidan completed his Leaving Cert last June and throughout his time in BVS he was a most pleasant, hardworking and diligent student. We extend our sincere sympathy to his mother, father and his sister Sinead. May he rest in peace.

All-Ireland Drama Competition: The very best of luck to our TY students on their entries to the RTE All-Ireland Drama Competition. Our students got the opportunity to write a One Act play of 2,000 words. Students had to include stage directions, character descriptions, etc. TY students wrote on a variety of different themes and topics. Well done to all our aspiring drama writers.

TY Success: Congratulations to the Transition Year students who received their certificate of completion from Glasnevin Cemetery as part of the Tour Guiding Programme. This programme was completed as part of their History and Geography module. Students visited the cemetery on two occasions to develop their public speaking and research skills. Each student researched the life of a historical figure buried in Glasnevin and presented this information to their classmates while being judged by Glasnevin Tour guides. Special mention was given to Chloe Grzywacz, Jade Grzywacz, Jasmine Fleming, Shane Natton, Juliette Byrne and Joe English for their excellent presentations. Shane Natton and Chloe Grzywacz were specially selected to represent the school at a national level in April. Well done to everybody on their wonderful achievement.  A special thanks to Mr. Casey and Ms. Clarke for organising this worthwhile and beneficial opportunity for students.

Gratitude: The management and staff of BVS, together with the BVS Senior Football team would like to express our gratitude to Excel Dental for sponsoring our new set of jerseys. The BVS Senior Football team recently put in an outstanding performance in the North Leinster Quarter Final against Mercy Ballymahon. Match report to follow next week.

Destination Google HQ, Dublin for our Safer Internet Day Ambassadors:
Fifth Year students Ava Fallon and Eoghan McCormack have recently been selected by Webwise.ie to be Safer Internet Day Ambassadors for Ballymahon Vocational School. On Thursday, 10th January Ava and Eoghan set off to attend training to lead our awareness raising campaign for safer Internet Day. Each Safer Internet Day Ambassador receives free online and offline training from the Webwise team and members of ISSU (Irish Second-Level Students Union). Developing teamwork and communication skills, our SID Ambassadors Ava and Eoghan will also learn about leadership, as together they lead an internet safety campaign in our school. This is a great opportunity for students from BVS to work with students from across Ireland and help create a positive environment in schools and communities. Over 102, 000 students celebrated Safer Internet Day across Ireland in 2018 and we have no doubt that Eoghan and Ava will go on to make Safer Internet Day 2019 in Ballymahon Vocational School a great success. More to follow next week!
