School Notes 10 February 2017


The Interschools Showjumping Competition: The Interschools Showjumping Competition took place on Saturday 11th February 2017 in Cavan Equestrian Centre. The school had both a Novice and Open team competing on the day with some individual entries as well. Well done to all who took part in a most enjoyable competition.

First Year Assessment Test: The first year assessment test took place on Saturday 11th February 2017. We look forward to welcoming our incoming first years in August.

RSA School Visit: The Road Safety Authority of Ireland visited Ballymahon Vocational School as part of the Transition Year road safety week. All students in the school participated in the interactive shuttle bus and senior students took part in the roll-over simulator. This was a very informative presentation on the importance of road safety.

Mock Examinations: Mock examinations for 3rd and 6th year students got off to a good start on Tuesday 7th February 2017.

LCVP Presentation: Mr Brady Midland Language School gave a very informative presentation on entrepreneurship to the Leaving Certificate LCVP class.

Poet’s Visit: On Monday last we were delighted to welcome Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin (poet) to our school. Eiléan gave a presentation on the thoughts and ideas behind some of her poems on the Leaving Cert Course to Ms. Smith, Mr. Casey and Mr. Dennigan’s 5th year English classes. We sincerely thank Eiléan for her visit and her reflection on her poetry.

Flash back Friday: This is a Transition Year initiative that will be taking place on the 10th March in our school from 7:30 pm to 10 p.m. The night will run with a 1950’s to 00’s them. On the night a Disco King and Queen will be announced. More details to follow over the coming weeks!!

Library Visit: On Thursday last our 1st year students travelled down to our local Library. This is an ongoing partnership with Ballymahon Library, whereby we visit the library once a month and encourage students to taken out some books. Students then review these books over the month. We once again thank the Library for their help and guidance. Happy Reading to all!!

Geography Visit: This week 5th Year Geography students completed their river field study in Derrygonnelly, Co. Fermanagh. Students investigated a meander site and carried out a range of measurements such as width, depth, bedload and velocity. They will report on their findings over the next few weeks. This project is worth 20% of their overall Leaving Cert grade. Many thanks to Ms. Clarke for organising the trip.
