Open Day at Ballymahon Vocational School: Thank you for coming along to our Open Day at BVS. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to view our bright and modern facilities, while getting to meet staff and new friends. Ballymahon Vocational School- Where the Individual Matters.

Basketball Triumph: Congratulations to the BVS U16 girls basketball team who had a great win on Monday over St Finian’s, Mullingar. We are now progressing to the quarter finals. This was the first time our new kit was used, proudly sponsored by Bord na Mona. We would like to extend our gratitude to Bord na Mona for their generous contribution to our school community.

Bridging the Gap: Over the past number of years our TY groups have worked very closely with our friends in Thomond Lodge Nursing Home. Each week our students visit the patients and work on different initiatives. We sincerely thank the management in the Nursing Home for affording us this opportunity.

Thank You: We sincerely thank all our 1st Year students who participated in our recent Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. Once again this was a tremendous success. Additionally, we thank the parents/guardians for their support of this project.

Daycare and Resource Centre: Each year in BVS we like to form new links in the community. On Monday last we linked up with the Convent Daycare and Resource Centre. Each week our students will work with the staff in the Daycare centre and develop links with the Senior Citizens in our surrounding communities. We sincerely thank Breda and her staff for their warm welcome and we look forward to working with the Daycare Centre over the weeks and months ahead.

English Department News: It was a busy week for the English Department as Leaving Cert English students made a very rewarding trip last Tuesday to see Macbeth in the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone. Our Leaving Cert students got the opportunity to experience the Shakespearean masterpiece as it was meant to be experienced – live on stage. The production certainly proved to engage, excite and incite in students a new and invigorated interest in their studied text.  In addition, a group of 2nd year students attended the Fighting Words Creative Writing workshop in Dublin on Thursday last week. Fighting Words is a creative writing centre established by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love. Inspired by 826 National in the United States, Fighting Words is located on Behan Square, Russell Street, Dublin 1 – very close to Croke Park. Fighting Words helps students of all ages to develop their writing skills and to explore their love of writing.

Gaisce: TY Students are reminded that Friday next is the closing date for putting your name forward to complete the Gaisce Award.

Parent News: Are you concerned about your child/teen experiencing anxiety? Come along to a  FREE Triple P talk for parents of children and teenagers aged 6 – 14 years on Tuesday 20th November, 2018 in the Longford Arms Hotel at 10am. Science Week Celebrations: Science week commenced with a 2nd year trip to Athlone cinema to see “First Man”. 2nd years are currently studying Earth and Space so this film linked in well telling the story of Neill Armstrong and his journey to the moon. A great day was had by all. A big thank you to science teachers Ms Murray and Ms Mulcahy for organising the trip. More on Science Week to follow in next week’s edition.

Sincere Sympathy: Over the past number of weeks a number of our students and staff members had bereavements in their families. We as community wish to offer you and your families  our sincere condolences on your loss. As November is traditionally a month that we remember our deceased friends and family, we invite all our readers to take a moment to remember your loved ones who are deceased and maybe light a little candle in their memory over the days ahead.
